About this information product
Purpose
The aim of this safety guide is to provide users of Metropolis
®
ADM (Universal shelf) and
Metropolis
®
ADM (Compact shelf) systems with the relevant information and safety
guidelines to safeguard against personal injury. Furthermore, the safety guide may be
useful to prevent material damage to the equipment.
This information product contains the same chapter on safety in different languages to
ensure that all technical personnel can read the safety admonishments in their native
language and fully understand their meaning and importance.
The present safety guide must be read by the responsible technical personnel before
carrying out relevant work on the system. The valid version of this document must always
be kept close to the equipment.

Please refer to the section Structure of hazard statements (1-4) for a detailed description of
safety labels used throughout this safety guide.
Intended audience
The present safety guide addresses everyone carrying out work of any kind on Metropolis

Conventions used
This safety guide is divided into fascicles containing the same chapter on safety in
different languages.
The respective ISO language code precedes the individual title of each language-specific
part. The page numbering prefix corresponds to the fascicle number, for example page 3-5
is the fifth page in fascicle 3.

Overview
Purpose
The aim of this safety guide is to provide users of Metropolis
®
ADM (Universal shelf) and
Metropolis
®
ADM (Compact shelf) systems with the relevant information and safety
guidelines to safeguard against personal injury. Furthermore, the safety guide may be
useful to prevent material damage to the equipment.
The present safety guide must be read by the responsible technical personnel before
carrying out relevant work on the system. The valid version of this document must always
be kept close to the equipment.
Potential sources of danger
The system has been developed in line with the present state-of-the-art and fulfils the
current national and international safety requirements. It is provided with a high degree of
operational safety resulting from many years of development experience and continuous
stringent quality checks in our company.
The system is safe in normal operation. There are, however, some potential sources of
danger that cannot be completely eliminated. In particular, these sources of danger arise in
the following circumstances.
When you open housings or equipment covers.
When you perform work of any kind within the system, even if the system has been
disconnected from the power supply.
When you disconnect optical or electrical connections.
The sources of danger are due to possible contact with any of the following items:
•Live parts.
Laser light.
Hot surfaces.
Sharp edges.

Structure of hazard statements
Overview
Hazard statements describe the safety risks relevant while performing tasks on Lucent
Technologies products during deployment and/or use. Failure to avoid the hazards may
have serious consequences.
General structure
Hazard statements include the structural elements shown in Figure 1-1.

Signal words
The signal words that identify the hazard severity levels are shown in Table 1-1.
Table 1-1 Signal words for hazard severity
Signal word Meaning
DANGER Indicates an imminently hazardous situation (high risk) which, if not avoided,
will result in death or serious injury.
WARNING Indicates a potentially hazardous situation (medium risk) which, if not
avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION When used with the personal injury symbol:
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation (low risk) which, if not avoided,
may result in personal injury.
When used without the personal injury symbol:
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation (low risk) which, if not avoided,
may result in property damage, such as service interruption or damage to
equipment or other materials.

Basic safety aspects
General safety requirements
In order to keep the technically unavoidable residual risk to a minimum, it is imperative to
observe the following rules:
Transport, storage and operation of the system must be under the permissible
conditions only.
See accompanying documentation and information on the system.
Installation, configuration and disassembly must be carried out only by expert
personnel and with reference to the respective documentation.
Due to the complexity of the system, the personnel requires special training.
The system must be operated by expert and authorised users only.
The user must operate the system only after having read and understood this safety
guide and the parts of the documentation relevant to operation. For complex systems,
additional training is recommended. Any obligatory training for operating and
service personnel must be carried out and documented.
The system must not be operated unless it is in perfect working order.
Any faults and errors that might affect safety must be reported immediately by the
user to a person in responsibility.
The system must be operated only with the connections and under the environmental
conditions as described in the documentation.
Any conversions or changes to the system or parts of the system (including the
software) must be carried out by qualified Lucent Technologies personnel or by
expert personnel authorised by Lucent Technologies.
All changes carried out by other persons lead to a complete exemption from liability.
No components/spare parts must be used other than those recommended by the
manufacturer and those listed in the procurement documents.
The removal or disabling of safety facilities, the clearing of faults and errors, and the
maintenance of the equipment must be carried out by specially qualified personnel
only.
The respective parts of the documentation must be strictly observed. The
documentation must also be consulted during the selection of measuring and test
equipment.
Calibrations, special tests after repairs and regular safety checks must be carried out,
documented and archived.
Non-system software is used at one’s own risk. The use/installation of non-system
software can adversely affect the normal functioning of the system.
Only use tested and virus-free data carriers (floppy disks, streamer tapes, ...).

System design
The Metropolis
®
ADM (Universal shelf) and Metropolis
®
ADM (Compact shelf) systems
comply with all essential safety requirements as stated in IEC 60825-1 and IEC 60825-2
as a Class 1 optical fiber telecommunication laser product; please also refer to the section
“Classification of optical telecommunication equipment” (1-17).
The system has been designed to ensure that the operating personnel is not endangered by
laser radiation during normal system operation. The safety measures specified in the
FDA/CDRH regulations and the international standards IEC 60825-Part 1 and 2
respectively are met. Please also refer to the section “Laser product classification” (1-15).

This laser safety label (not to scale) is affixed on all hazard level 1M optical circuit packs
and on all Dispersion Compensation Module (DCM) units:
Potential sources of danger
Beware of the following potential sources of danger which will remain despite all safety
measures taken:
Laser radiation can cause damage to the skin and eyes.
Laser radiation from optical transmission systems is in a wavelength range that is
invisible to the human eye.
Laser classes
The maximum output power of laser radiation depends on the type of laser diode used.
The international standard IEC 60825-1 as well as the Food and Drug Administration’s
Center for Devices and Radiological Health (FDA/CDRH) regulations define the
maximum output power of laser radiation for each laser class in accordance with the
wavelength.

The classification scheme is based on the ability of the laser emission or the reflected laser
emission to cause injury to the eye or skin during normal operating conditions.
Please also refer to the section “Laser product classification” (1-15).
Laser safety instructions
During service, maintenance, or restoration, an optical fiber telecommunication system is
considered unenclosed.
Observe the following laser safety instructions to avoid exposing yourself and others to
risk:
Only authorized, trained personnel shall be permitted to do service, maintenance, and
restoration. All unauthorized personnel shall be excluded from the immediate area of
the optical fiber telecommunication systems during installation and service.
Read the relevant descriptions in the manuals before taking equipment into operation
or carrying out any installation and maintenance work on the optical port units, and
follow the instructions. Ignoring the instructions may result in hazardous laser
radiation exposure.
Do not view directly into the laser beam with optical instruments such as a fiber
microscope, because viewing of laser emission in excess of Class 1 limits
significantly increases the risk of eye damage.
Never look into the end of an exposed fiber or into an open connector as long as the
optical source is still switched on.
Ensure that the optical source is switched off before disconnecting optical fiber
connectors.
In the event of doubt, verify that the optical source is switched off by measuring with
an optical power meter.
Laser radiation
Use of controls, adjustments and procedures other than those specified herein may result
in hazardous laser radiation exposure.

connectors.
The LKA24, LKA25, LKA26, LKA27 and LKA47 core units as well as the LKA22 and

The LKA6, LKA11, LKA13 and LKA14 optical tributary units are equipped with SC-type
connectors.
The LKA5B, LKA10, LKA42 and LKA44 core units are equipped with universal optical
connectors, which allow SC-, FC- and ST-types of connectors. The default connector type
is SC-type.
All optical transceiver modules are equipped with LC-type connectors.
