Introduction
The S1 is the result of over 30 years experience in stage
sound technology.
The design brief was simple- build the best vocal mic
in the world! How do you achieve that? Well, you need
to have a sound quality that is equal to the fi nest studio
microphones, and certainly
has the experience
to make this happen!
The studio quality is a great start, but for live use the
microphone must not suffer from feedback, handling or
plosive noise. It must also have a tailored response that
takes into consideration the proximity effect. What else?
It must be able to take the knocks and bumps of the
road! The S1 does it all, and in my opinion, is the best
looking vocal mic around.
While using the S1 is quite simple, and there are not
many things you need to learn, please take a moment
to read through this user manual, and then visit
www.rodemic.com and register your microphone for a
full ten year warranty.
While there you can view studio tips and techniques, as
well as browse the comprehensive range of accessories
for
microphones. Thank you for investing in your
S1 live condenser microphone.

The S1 is a phantom powered microphone. To
operate correctly it requires a 48V phantom supply
from the mixing console, PA head or other source.
It is recommended that you use a high-quality
microphone lead, and keep it as short as practical
for your stage set up. This will ensure the highest
quality sound reproduction.
When using stage monitors, set them up as shown
below. This will direct the sound to your ears and
towards the least responsive part of the S1’s pick
up pattern.
While PA set up is well beyond this manual, if you
want to get the best sound possible with the least
problems, we recommend a book by Australian
audio legend Duncan Fry, titled “Live Sound
Mixing”.
Using the S1

A quick tip to reduce feedback - never put your
hands over the ball head. This can signifi cantly
change the pick-up area of the mic, and can cause
feedback. And of course, never point the front of
mic at the speakers!
The ball head of the S1 is an engineering marvel.
Made up of fi ve separate mesh screens the outer
is heat-treated steel, which has been bead-blasted
and nickel-plated. Internally we have stainless steel
meshes as well as a fi nal nylon mesh. These fi lters
are design to remove vocal plosives, while not
affecting the frequency response. The mesh head
can be unscrewed and washed in soap and water.
Please fully dry the head before re-assembly and
be sure to take care with the mic once the head has
been removed.
After use the S1 should be wiped with a dry, soft
cloth and placed in its protective case.
Be sure to place the moisture-absorbent crystals
(supplied) at the head of the microphone, so as to
absorb any moisture present.
Eventually this pack of crystals will need to be
dried. This is indicated by the crystals turning pink
in colour.
They can easily be re-used by placing them in an
oven at 100 - 150 degrees celsius for approximately
ten minutes. The crystals will operate effectively
again once they have turned blue.
